A Spring Walk

It’s been shamefully long since I’ve written anything on this blog. To be honest, I have thought about writing on here lately, but I can’t seem to find the words or thoughts to share. Motivation has been lacking for that matter as well. Sometimes life can feel like a standstill and with it, thoughts as well.

However, one of the greatest lessons I received in writing was to never stop–to simply write, even if the words failed and thoughts were incoherent. Writing takes practice. It takes intentionality. It’s a hard lesson for someone like me who wants immediate, perfected outcomes. Sometimes, many times, creativity can be a struggle. But maybe there is something to that. The slow process of growth allows us to see things we could so easily pass by.

So bear with me. This post is not meant to be a profound thought nor a deep metaphorical statement. It’s just a short spring walk I invite you on…one that I took today. And it’s one step, then two, then three that gets me back into the rhythm of writing.

The branch has yet to grow buds. It is still brown and bare but that only makes the robin perched high upon it that more charming. The ground is still faded and muddy with dead leaves scattered across the yard; but a cluster of violets sprouting up from the soil magnetically draws you downward to snap a picture. The snow from the morning, now dissipated by the day, may have left its icy steam lingering in the air like a walk-in freezer; but the sun is bright and warm in spots. Sometimes you feel it through the tingling of your skin. The sky is clearer…bluer than it was a month ago. And the ground you walk upon no longer holds the sound of slushing, crunching snow. It is the steady rhythm of your clopping boots upon the dry pavement that brings a contented smile to your face. Spring hasn’t just appeared outside your bedroom window, it has seeped into your heart. There is a joy found in this newness and a hope that grows with the growing seedlings you planted a few weeks ago. You can’t help but whisper to the Creator who created the perfected timing of this season, “Thank you for these simple gifts.”
